Dunaway derives from Ulster-Irish rather than the southern dialects which give us variants of O'Donoghue.
There are four identified, genetically distinct, branches of Dunaways, two of which are O'Donoghue, though all four have an accepted place within the O'Donoghue Society.

The third branch of Dunaways descend from Niall of the Nine Hostages and are, accordingly, part of the O'Neill Clan.
The fourth branch are of Viking descent.
Thus ours could/should be seen as a Clan reflecting two periods of Irish history: that of the 9th Century alliance between the Northern Ui Neill and the Viking Kings of Dublin; and later when the O'Donoghues joined the O'Neills' 16th Century war against Tudor England (Henry VIII - Elizabeth I)... And our emigration from Ireland seems to align, very much, with that century of conflict which culminated with the destruction of the Spanish Armada and the attendant/subsequent defeat of the O'Neills and O'Donoghues and others at the Siege/Battle of Kinsale (1601).
